October rolls in with networking, job fair events

NWjobs

There's one nice thing about the blustery days and lengthening, rainy nights of early fall: It gives you fewer excuses to avoid knuckling down and concentrating on your job search. With October right around the corner, Seattle networking organizations are kicking their fall event schedules into high gear to help match you up with the right employer.

In fact, there are so many events, we have to start off the October listings with the last day of September:

Wed., Sept. 30
Jobnob's Happy Hour Seattle, starting at 4 p.m.
- A few weeks ago, I wrote an item about a San Francisco-based networking group called Jobnob. The group was expanding north to hold events in Seattle for cash-conscious startups that were looking for entrepreneurial individuals who can work for little or no pay to help get the companies off the ground. Since that post, the Jobnob folks have waived the $10 fee and are now offering free admission to all job-seekers (startups must still pay $20 to attend). If you're willing to volunteer some of your time in exchange for getting in on the ground floor of a new startup, head on down to the Copper Cart Café & Lounge in Belltown and hear some of the latest pitches. For more information, visit the Jobnob registration page.

Thurs., Oct. 1
Rev-up the Workforce, 4 to 6 p.m.
- Those who have survived several rounds of layoffs and have managed to hang onto their jobs are clearly in better shape than the tens of thousands who are out of work right now. But that doesn't mean their lives are easy. PRforPeople is sponsoring a presentation by Dr. Robert Fallis, an industrial psychologist who will offer tips for how to cope with "survivor's guilt," along with the increased workloads, decreased benefits and lack of security that all come with the economic recession. The free presentation, which includes a Q&A period, will take place at Queen Anne's Bustle Café. For more details, contact Patricia Vaccarino at patricia@xanthuscom.com; 206-979-3380.

Oct. 13:
Seattle Career Search Seminar, 9 to 10 a.m.
- Several times a month, the Puget Sound Business Journal's Elizabeth Case presents an Inside the Business Journal seminar about how to use the paper to identify job opportunities, recognize industry trends and stand out in a crowded job search market. At this free session, held at the Norton Building Conference Center downtown, Case will also offer a bonus: Those who sign up for a subscription to the PSBJ at the special discounted $75 annual rate will receive a Career Search Starter Kit, that will contain the 2009 Book of Lists, Case's top 10 networking tips, a career search resource list and the Journal's editorial and events calendars. See the registration page for more details.

Wed., Oct. 14
The Greater Seattle Job Fair, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- We all know that most job fairs these days are not the most productive use of your time, with paying jobs scarce and attendance lackluster. However, if you only go to one of these events per quarter, make sure it's this Job Fair, sponsored by Jobbernaut. Every time Jobbernaut comes around to Qwest Field, it seems to have the highest number of hiring companies (usually more than 30) of all the other local job fairs. Be sure to check back in at the fair's information page next week when Jobbernaut lists all of the exhibitors that are expected to attend. For more information, call 425-397-7114.

Notes From the Job Search is a group that is similar to several of those you mention, just home grown. :) We actually have a meeting every Tuesday in West Seattle (11 AM -- C&P Coffee) and Wednesday (3 PM -- Green Bean Coffee). We've been meeting since April and normally between 10 and 15 in attendance. We work very hard to build on the strengths of those present and help each other find jobs.
