Have we all enjoyed our extra hour this morning? The end of Daylight Saving time means the days of 4 p.m. sunsets are fast approaching. Instead of using today's time change to scarf down your remaining Halloween candy, perhaps it would be better to spend that hour registering for this week's career planning events around the region. Here are some suggestions to kick off your November job search efforts.
Bellevue College's Power Workshops - The college's Center for Career Connections sponsors a series of free workshops on career and job-search advice. This week, the center is offering Creating an Effective Resume on Tues., Nov. 3, from 1:30 to 2:20 p.m. On Thurs., Nov. 5, the center will conduct its Cover Letter Review from 10:30 to 11:20 a.m., which will also provide tips on letters of inquiry and marketing letters. The cover letter session is free, but registration is required. Call 425-564-2279 or visit the fall workshop schedule page for more details.
Age 55+ Job Search Workshop - The Mayor's Office for Senior Citizens will hold this free event on Wed., Nov. 4, at downtown Seattle's Central Building from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The session covers such topics as job coaching, job-related computer training classes, a job list, Web site navigation and other services for older workers. For more information, call 206-684-0500, or visit the MOSC site.
ProLango Consulting Seminars - Paul Anderson's career development firm is holding two free seminars this week to help jump-start your job search. On Wed., Nov. 4, check out the Career Search Seminar 2.0, which will share advice about how to avoid common mistakes many job-seekers make and discuss how to find positions that aren't posted publicly. Then, on Thurs., Nov. 5, come see Anderson's Psychology of Interviewing seminar, which teaches you psychological techniques to gain leverage in your next job interview and increase your chances of getting hired. Both events will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Thinkspace offices in Redmond. Visit the ProLango seminar page for more details.
Resume Empowerment Class - Career counselor Gary Kanter, co-author of "Resume Empowerment! Shattering the Paper Ceiling," presents common-sense strategies on resume writing on Thurs., Nov. 5, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Bellevue's Newport Way Library. Admission is free, but registration is required. For more information, visit the registration page or call 425-747-2390.
Interview Workshop - On Thurs., Nov. 5, career counselor Laila Atallah will conduct free mock interviews and provide specific feedback and strategies about how to make job seekers feel empowered and more confident. Bring your resume to Wallingford's Mosaic Cafe from 6:30 to 8:45 p.m. and learn how to develop your 60-second summary. For more info, visit Atallah's Web site.
