Networking events to warm up winter's half-way point

NWjobs

As we approach the midway point of winter, with Punxsutawney Phil getting ready to awaken in Central Pennsylvania, I'm going to avoid the whole idea of looking for my shadow and jetting off to Miami Beach this week. Before you get jealous, I'm covering a four-day conference for Six Sigma process improvement professionals, so I doubt I'll be seeing much Florida sun and sand.

But never fear, my loyal Hire Ground readers--while I may be temporarily living in a warmer climate, I'm still looking around for tips and information to help land you a great job in the cool, wet Puget Sound region. (Yes, I take my advice to heart when I recommend multi-tasking whenever possible.) This week there are some great events to kick off your February job search activities and improve your online networking and interviewing skills.

Wed., Feb. 3 -- Power up Your Networking with Online Social Networks. For its February breakfast event, the local chapter of the Institute of Management Consultants is hosting a presentation by Elizabeth Andreini, an online social network specialist with Accelerate Marketing. In her speech, she will discuss the explosive growth of social networks and share tips on how to connect more effectively with businesses and hiring managers. Where: The Bellevue Club. When: 7 to 9 a.m. Cost: $25 for IMC members; $35 for the general public before Feb. 2.

Wed., Feb. 3 -- Not Just Biznik As Usual - Successful Networking the Biznik Way. This latest installment in Biznik's Business Essentials series, features a three-hour workshop by management consultants John Erdman, Richard Gabel and Pete DiSantis. The event will focus on ways to use the Biznik network of entrepreneurs to develop effective, long-term business relationships and identify your target market. Where: Bellevue. When: 1 to 4 p.m. Cost: Free.

Thurs., Feb. 4 -- 10 Proven Ways to Ace the Interview and Get the Dream Job. The Job Seeker Network is back with another helpful presentation by Lewis Lin, a Seattle-based interview coach. Lin will discuss answers to those tricky questions--such as "Where do you see yourself in five years?" and "What's your biggest weakness?"--and share some interview preparation techniques. Where: Mercer Island Library. When: 5:45 to 8:30 p.m. Cost: Free (BYOB).

Also: Mark your calendar! Jobbernaut is returning to Seattle on Wed., Feb. 10, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.. As I've said before, job fairs are often hit-or-miss affairs (OK, mostly miss affairs). But Jobbernaut is a cut above, often showcasing the greatest concentration of companies with immediate job openings as opposed to the "business opportunities" found at many other events. Check out their website to register early and schedule interviews with attending companies.

At first I thought you were heading to sunny FLA for the big game ... When you get back you might consider blogging a bit about my personal social media campaign to find employment. It kicks off today Feb 1st and I am looking to secure employment by the end of the month. I will be blogging about it daily at http://JoeKennedy.biz
