How to reinvent your career for 2010

NWjobs

As all the gymnasium and weight loss companies know all to well, January is the month to capitalize on everybody's need to make lists, get organized and start on new regimens in a surge of reinvention. The record of success for most of these resolutions is spotty, at best, but our need to keep making them seems inexhaustible, especially at the start of a new decade.

On the job-search front, this post-holiday season of resolution means more than just having a neat house or looking good in a bathing suit. It can mean the difference between catching the eye of a hiring manager and getting lost amid the stacks of resumes. This week is packed with events that will help recharge your job-search batteries, make some new networking contacts and perhaps point you in a new direction for the new year.

Mon., Jan 11 - "Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us." Sponsored by the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce, this discussion features author Daniel H. Pink, who will share his insights about what motivates us and gives advice on how to use this knowledge to work smarter in 2010. Pink will also talk about companies and entrepreneurs that are enlisting new motivational approaches. Where: Rainier Square Conference Center, Seattle. When: Noon to 1:30 p.m. (includes lunch). Cost: $25.

Mon., Jan. 11 - Intro to Public Relations. Looking for a new career that can be applied to almost any industry? You may be interested in checking out this online, four-week Media Bistro introductory course. Instructor and public relations expert S.j Sebellin-Ross will show you how to develop and write polished PR materials, build a targeted media outreach program, write effective pitch letters, and create a targeted, tactical PR plan. Where: Online. When: Jan. 11 to Feb. 8; online chats every Monday, 8 to 9 p.m. Cost: $350 for four weeks ($325 for AvantGuild members).

Tues., Jan. 12 -- After Hours Networking Social. For those looking to start their own business, this Biznik mixer will be a great way to introduce themselves to the Seattle area's brightest entrepreneurs and small-business owners. This Eastside event will be held in a spacious and fully functional auto repair shop and will include complimentary appetizers, beer, wine and soft drinks. Where: East Urban Auto Service, Kirkland. When: 6 to 8 p.m. Cost: Free (but Biznik membership, also free, is required).

Fri., Jan. 15 -- Toast of Seattle. One of Seattle's most popular networking series is back for another year. This Seattle Chamber event features three structured networking rounds over a continental breakfast. Where: Outback Steakhouse Lake Union, Seattle. When: 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Cost: $15 ($20 after Jan. 13).

Sat., Jan. 16 -- The Inner View: Transforming Job Interview Fear into Fire. For those who are haunted by horrific memories of bad job interviews, this workshop will help exorcise your demons. Lori Stephens of i2i Communication Training mixes standard job interview techniques with confidence-building tactics, such as full-sensory engagement, visualization, role play and group energizers. Where: Montlake Library, Seattle. When: Noon to 4 p.m. Cost: Free.

I think in 2010 networking will be more important than ever. Jobs are becoming tough to get and scarce, so 'who you know' is becoming more important that ever. Good looking workshops.
