Job searching in 2010: On to bigger, better things
NWjobs
As we break out our new calendars that we got for Christmas, it's customary that we take a moment to look back at the highs and lows of the previous year and reassess what it has meant to us. Well, the last 365 days were pretty much all lows, so I say it's time to burn our bridges and try to forget 2009 ever happened.
Hire Ground is all about moving forward, so I'll spare you the litany of woes that were heaped upon job seekers in the Year That Shall Remain Nameless. On the first day of this new decade, I say it's time to start making the "twenty-teens" (or whatever we wind up calling it) a repudiation of everything that happened during the Awful Aughts.
Here are some Seattle-area networking events and workshops next week to help keep you centered on your goals and kick-start your efforts to find a new job in 2010.
Tues., Jan . 5 - Crafting Your Personal Mission & Vision. This latest Accelerated Networking Luncheon, sponsored by the eWomenNetwork, features a discussion with Debrena Jackson Gandy, an organizational development consultant, performance coach and trainer. During this luncheon, she will help attendees make the connections between their passions and natural strengths. Where: McCormick & Schmick's Harborside, Lake Union. When: 11:15 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Cost: $55.
Wed., Jan. 6 - Scratch 2009: Cue Up 2010. What strategies worked for you last year? Which ones flamed out? Share your stories over a few games of pool with other "2009 survivors" at this informal gathering, hosted by the Seattle Direct Marketing Association and the Puget Sound Chapter of the American Marketing Association. Where: Garage Billiards, Capitol Hill. When: 5:30 to 8 p.m. Cost: Free for SDMA/PSAMA members; $15 for nonmembers; $10 for students with valid ID.
Thurs., Jan. 7 - Job Hunters LinkedIn Tent Revival Meeting. If you're looking for a job and don't yet have a LinkedIn profile, now's the time to get one started. This workshop will show you how the social networking site's many search tools can help connect you with hiring managers at companies where you want to work. Where: School of Visual Concepts, Seattle. When: 6:30 to 8 p.m. Cost: Free.
Sat., Jan. 9 - Job Hunting Skills Workshop. Learn how to shine in your next job interview by turning the tables on the process.
