Celebrating our maritime and labor heritage this May Day

NWjobs

Happy May Day, everyone! May 1st has been claimed by many cultures and organizations, celebrating everything from the advent of spring to religious rituals to international socialism. This year, by happy coincidence, the labor-themed holiday has another layer of significance by falling on the Opening Day of the boating season -- a cherished Seattle tradition.

One of this week's networking events dovetails nicely into this maritime-labor theme, with a career fair (see below) offering job opportunities in the local fishing industry. As we pause this May Day to watch the decorated boats sail the Montlake Cut and honor our workers who are lucky enough to still have jobs, here are a few other networking events that are happening around the region this week.

MON., MAY 3

Not Just Biznik As Usual - Biznik's popular workshop returns, featuring a presentation by career coach John Erdman, business consultant Richard Gabel and productivity expert Pete DiSantis about understanding the importance of networking. Learn new conversational skills and try them out on some the region's top entrepreneurs. Where: Laughs Comedy Spot, Kirkland. When: 1 to 4 p.m. Cost: Free.

TUES., MAY 4

New Rules of the Job Search for the New Economy -- Duncan Burgess, director of the South Seattle Community College WorkSource, presents this workshop, about developing a successful job-search plan, interviewing advice, where to find free career counseling and tips on how to get the job you want. Where: Bellevue Library, Bellevue. When: 7 to 8:30 p.m. Cost: Free.

WED., MAY 5

Tax Tips for the Self-Employed - Tax time may be over for most of us, but for those who freelance or own their own businesses, every day can feel like tax day. In these two webcasts, Seattle CPA Tawni Berg will discuss ways to save you thousands of tax dollars. Where: SmallBusinessWebcast.com. When: 11 a.m. to noon, and again, 6 to 7 p.m. Cost: Free.

THURS., MAY 6

Seattle Career Fair -- Meet face-to-face with hiring managers from dozens of employers in the greater Seattle area. By registering for a free VIP Pass before the event, you can gain quick access to hiring managers in your chosen field without waiting in long lines. Where: Northwest Rooms, Seattle Center. When: 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost: Free

Maritime Career Day - Celebrate Seattle's rich maritime heritage and learn about job and volunteer opportunities in the maritime community during the 2010 Seattle Maritime Festival on the waterfront. Representatives from local fisheries, as well as government, environmental, research and educational organizations, are expected to attend. Where: Maritime Event Center, Pier 66, Seattle. When: 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost: Free.
