Networking events that mix business with pleasure
NWjobs
As Seattleites, we can be a bit stand-offish at times. Perhaps a little distant. But when the weather is nice and the days are long, it's like we all turn into garrulous Californians. How else can we explain the large number of networking parties springing up next week? Well, a brightening economy may have something to do with it, too.
As we've seen in the last few months, there has also been more activity in the venture capital market, spawning a number of events discussing the growth of the latest startup companies that may be the source of tomorrow's job opportunities.
MON., MAY 17
Interviewing Mastery: Take Control - You may think interviewers always have the upper hand during job interviews, but that is not always the case. ProLango's Paul Anderson will teach you communication techniques that will empower you to take over your next interview by demonstrating your expertise. Where: Tacoma Public Library, Tacoma. When: 10 a.m to 2 p.m. Cost: Free, but advance registration is required.
TUES., MAY 18
Beginning a Job Search -- If you've just been laid off or are deciding to change jobs, this overview, presented by WorkSource at South Seattle Community College, will show you how to develop a successful action plan and discuss useful job-hunting strategies. Where: Greenwood Library, Seattle. When: 4 to 5:30 p.m. Cost: Free.
Seattle Job Social - Following the success of its previous networking event, which attracted more than 200 attendees, Seattle Job Social is back with another chance for you to meet with recruiters and employers and to build your system of professional referrals. Where: Twist Restaurant & Lounge, Belltown. When: 6 to 9 p.m. Cost: $5; must send resume with RSVP.
WED., MAY 19
The Biggest Networking Night of the Year - OK, I admit I don't know much about this one, but you have to hand it to the organizers for pure chutzpah. Though it claims to be a "VIP invite" event, anyone is welcome to attend this networking mixer, sponsored by MoodyTime Events, which has been holding these social events around the country. Drink discounts and prizes will be offered. Couldn't hurt to attend. Where: Spitfire, Seattle. When: 6 to 10 p.m. Cost: $10 in advance; $20 at the door.
THURS., MAY 20
Northwest Startup Demo - Come see which new companies have earned the respect of local venture capital and angel investor groups. After going through a rigorous screening process, the six new companies at this MIT Enterprise Forum Northwest event will showcase their latest products and services. A must-see for anyone interested in getting an early look at tomorrow's successful companies. Where: One Union Square Building, Seattle. When: 6 to 8 p.m. Cost: $25.
FRI., MAY 21
Toast of Seattle -- One of the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce's most successful mixers, this breakfast event features three structured rounds of networking activities at some of the region's best venues. This month, registrants will have a chance at winning a complimentary weekend night stay at the Fairfield Inn. Where: Fairfield Inn Marriott, Bellevue. When: 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Cost: $15 in advance; $20 after May 19.
