Herrera Environmental Consultants
"Can't get no greener." That's how one employee sums up Herrera, a consulting firm that focuses on water protection, habitat restoration and sustainable development. They've been busy on projects like helping to design the new Seattle waterfront, and restoring the wetlands on the Upper Skagit Indian Reservation to bring native salmon back to an area the tribe hasn't had access to for 100 years. The Belltown-based company has always walked the walk of environmentalism within its own walls as well, with around three-quarters of the staff biking to work and a strong effort toward recycling and composting. But over the last year they have gotten even greener. Their office went through a complete green remodel, with low-VOC paint and renewable resource materials throughout, including an impressive new reception desk made entirely from reclaimed wood. The cars that they do use they've greened up as well, trading in three older vehicles in their fleet for a Ford Escape Hybrid. And if there's any way to get greener still, we can bet they'll do it.
